I am a lifelong musician - writing, recording, performing & producing music & vocals for decades, helping scores of client vocalists in various styles at all levels of ability and have minutely chosen, edited & mixed literally thousands of vocal takes as an engineer & producer!

As time went on & with experience gained, I naturally became a crash-course vocal coach for client artists, trying to squeeze the best out of them or fix issues in the short time that we had together during recording sessions in the studio, since vocal performances are by far THE most important part of any music piece that involves vocals. Now I can dedicate to working vocals even more, but as the 'point of the spear' amongst all the other important aspects.

have always worked hard on my own voice & instrumental abilities over the years in the pursuit of making all kinds of music.

My Acoustic singer-songwriter EP Release (first track is below!) is a good example of where i have got to (i'm even better now!) - not so many years ago i thought playing guitar whilst singing & doing it well, was just too difficult a task - but with work & persistance, I shattered my own preconceptions... and we can do that with you too.. you'd be amazed at where you can get to with focus and a little guidance.

This makes me a better coach for you today with genuine insights since i suffered from many of the common problems, bad habits or limitations that people face & over the years worked hard on finding ways to overcome them.

Now - I have worked to add specialist knowledge & all the tools of vocal coaching & development to my skill set, allowing me to bring a lifetime of musical experience to bear to help you develop your own instrument, break out of bad habits & importantly develop student's musicality.. after all -

A beautifully tuned & voiced concert piano still needs a concert pianist to get the most out of it!

It's important to understand that good singing takes both a good musician & a good instrument (like our pianist mentioned above) - and Bute Sound's whole-of-music approach, where one day you could be playing drums, the next a trombone, trumpet, guitar or keys, or another day rapping etc. all serve to improve our musical ear - so when we return to singing in our own voice, new capabilities are unlocked.

The important thing is getting off zero on as many things in the musical galaxy as possible.

It's a similar sort of approach to the 'marginal gains' system used by elite sportspeople, where many small aspects that may seem insignificant, are developed and combine to yield noticable benefits.

Lesson structure & inspiration

In 1999 via audition tapes & interview was fortunate to have the opportunity to spend 2 years as a Post Graduate at The Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama Conservertoire of the performing arts in Cardiff - Studying The Post Grad. Advanced Diploma in Music - Specialising in Music Technology - graduating in 2001 Achieving Distinction grades & praise for many of my (often very experminental) music compositions.

The one to one, in-person approach to professional music tuition we received whilst at the conservertoire is the inspiration & basis for how Bute Sound goes about tuition in Vocal performance & musicianship generally.

In-person is really the only way! in a dedicated musical space you can call your oasis.

Ultimately I need to hear you & respond to you in person, plus you need to hear yourself as well as possible to get accurate feedback.

The best place for that is a dedicated, acoustically treated space with professional recording equipment & a keen helpful ear alongside you.

Lessons are unique to each individual - I listen to each student & WE discuss & craft how your lessons will form, to maximise development, taking into account your needs & interests.

The intention with all lessons & for all clients is to keep things varied and challenging, whether you are a seasoned performer or starting out on your musical journey, keeping it interesting whilst building each student's 'skill stack' as we go..

Course regularity & structure is of course flexible & open to discussion, but weekly tutorial sessions for singing lessons are a good start point, but depending on your needs or budget, we can do more with less too!
